More
of the Story—Continued from 9-11-13: The land was deeded and plans for the
house were drawn up. Because of their largess, each set of parents claimed
executive privilege over the wants of their children. The house was encouraged
to be too large (and too expensive) from the start to make sure there was
plenty of room for grandchildren. His mother insisted that the young couple's
house be in close proximity to and with the front door facing her house. Since
both young people had always acquiesced to their parents' wishes, desires, and
demands, they did so this time also.
One
evening shortly after the couple had moved into their new home, the young wife
came home from doing farm chores to find her husband's mother busy in the
kitchen. In response to her daughter-in-law's puzzled expression, her
mother-in-law said, "I want to be sure Junior gets a decent home-cooked
meal every now and then." This was just the first of her mother-in-law's
frequent intrusions into her daughter-in-law's home for reasons varying from
wanting Junior to have a clean home, to making sure he had enough clean
underwear. Although she repeatedly asked her husband to request that his mother
not come into their home uninvited, he refused. She was just trying to be
helpful, wasn't she?
Shortly
after their wedding, her father bought more land and increased the size of his
dairy herd—and the size of his mortgage—expecting that his daughter and her
husband would always be there to help with the extra work. Six months later
milk and grain prices plummeted forcing the young couple to seek part-time
employment in order to help the three families' meet expenses.
Shortly
before the hard times set in, the young wife became pregnant. It was a
difficult pregnancy from the beginning causing her to quit her job and adding
considerable expense to their already strained budget. At the beginning of her
eighth month, their baby was born with several congenital defects and died
after two postnatal months in intensive care. Overwhelmed by grief, debt and
fatigue from long hours on and off the farm, the couple's relationship became
strained. One evening, the young wife came home from work to find her
mother-in-law rearranging their living room furniture. In a burst of rage, she
physically pushed her mother-in-law out of their house with the order not to
return again unless invited. Her attack on his mother ruptured their already
tenuous relationship and her husband moved back to his home, which effectively
ended the marriage.

of it All.
